Maintaining a healthy, balanced diet can benefit anyone, but it's especially important for people living with moderate to severe RA. Poor eating habits can increase stress on weight-bearing joints and decrease your energy and mobility.

Fruits and vegetables
Fresh and frozen fruits and veggies are a good source of vitamins, minerals, and fiber. You might want to avoid canned vegetables, which may be high in sodium, and fruits that contain added sugar.
Grains are a good source of complex carbohydrates and key vitamins and minerals. Choose whole grain foods such as oatmeal, brown rice, and whole-grain cereal over refined products, which are stripped of many nutrients, including fiber.
Protein and dairy products
One-third of a balanced diet should consist of fat-free or low-fat dairy products and lean sources of protein. Low-fat protein options include skinless poultry, lean meats, fish, nuts, and beans.
Talk to your doctor before making any changes to your diet. Ask for a referral to a registered dietician for advice about healthful eating and the right plan for you.
